At Sydenham Joinery we've been making quality timber joinery for more than 25 years.
Founded in 1983 by Bernie Hunt and John Baker Snr, we were originally based in Waller Terrace and moved to our current Byron Street workshop in 1993.
With well over 150 years joinery experience between us, we believe we're the best in Christchurch at what we do. In addition to attracting and developing quality craftsmen, we are also proud to train and retain our talented apprentices, and to have created a team who really work well together.
To keep life interesting we have three J Bakers, two are Johns and one isn't! Two are related, the other isn't! Confused? Read on...
Bernie Hunt - Director
Even after 30 years working as a joiner Bernie Hunt loves making things. In fact, he thrives on it. Blessed with a gift for working with wood, Bernie's very happy when he's making something. It doesn't matter what it is, from simple boxes to replica Queen Anne furniture, the passion is still there.
Although much of his time these days is spent managing the business he can still be found on the shop floor, out on-site, talking to customers or installing a job. He's proud that Sydenham Joinery treat customers as individuals and that his staff consistently turn out a `Triple A' quality of joinery.
A committed Christian, Bernie likes to ensure that his staff and his customers are well looked after. He's also a family man, and when he's not taking care of business or involved at Church, Bernie enjoys spending time with his family and fishing.
John Baker Snr
Having started Sydenham Joinery together with Bernie back in 1983, John is particularly proud of the quality of work we produce at Sydenham Joinery.
These days John works in the business part-time and is responsible for keeping us on track, looking after administration and taking care of our accounts.
Outside of work he does `a little bit' of fishing and enjoys playing indoor bowls.
Dave Buchanan
Dave started his Joinery apprenticeship on his 15th birthday and has been in the trade for 50 years. Continuing to come to work part-time because he enjoys it, Dave has such a good overall knowledge about the joinery trade and industry as a whole, even top architects call up to pick his brain. He can help you with all your enquiries regarding timber joinery, windows, stairs and kitchens.
Dave gets satisfaction from the personal service we deliver at Sydenham Joinery. He'll be happy to talk to you about your options, pricing, how things are made and why things are done the way they are.
In his spare time Dave enjoys fishing, golf and spending time with his family.
